A Biomechanical Model for Soft Tissue Simulation in Craniofacial Surgery
نویسندگان
چکیده
Soft tissue prediction is an important additional criterion in surgical planning. Especially in craniofacial surgery the realistic prediction of a patient’s postoperative appearance is of utmost importance. A physically based modeling approach seems to be most suitable for the achievement of realistic results. Howevei; the properties of biological structures are highly complex and scarcely investigated, thus simplified models are o fen applied. In this paper we describe our FE based modeling approach for static soft tissue prediction and muscle muscle simulation. In addition to static soft tissue prediction, the estimation of a patient’s facial mimic is another important criterion for the prediction of postoperative results, as well as for enhanced patient compliance. An important prerequisite for the simulation of facial mimic is the realistic modeling of contracting muscles and their interaction with surrounding soft tissue. Since the information on microscopic structures such as muscle fibers can not be obtained from tomographic data, that are usually used for the reconstruction of a patient’s anatomy, a heuristic construction considering the natural relationship between the shape of muscles and their biomechanical functionality has to be applied. 2. Biomechanical Comparison Between Bashti Bone Plug Technique and Biodegradable Screw for Fixation of Grafts in Ligament surgery
Background: Ligament reconstruction is a common procedure in orthopedic surgery. Although several popular techniques are currently in use, new methods are proposed for secure fixation of the tendon graft into the bone tunnel. Purposes: We sought to introduce our new technique of Bashti bone plug for fixation of soft tissue graft in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and to compar...
متن کاملAdaptive Control Strategy for a Bilateral Tele- Surgery System Interacting with Active Soft Tissues
In this paper, the problem of control and stabilization of a bilateral tele-surgery roboticsystem in interaction with an active soft tissue is considered. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, theprevious works did not consider a realistic model for a moving soft tissue like heart tissue in beating heartsurgery. Here, a new model is proposed to indicate significant characteristics of a moving ...
متن کاملTowards a Realistic Simulation of Individual Facial Mimics
Besides the static soft tissue prediction in surgery simulation, the estimation of postoperative facial mimics is another important criterion for the evaluation of surgery planning. Especially in craniofacial surgery, the realistic prediction of patient’s dynamic appearance is of utmost importance. For a realistic simulation of facial mimics at least an adequate biomechanical model of soft tiss...
متن کاملA Nonlinear Elastic Soft Tissue Model for Craniofacial Surgery Simulations
Biomechanical modeling of soft tissue is essential to many computer assisted medical applications. Because of complexity of soft tissue behavior and a lack of exact and comprehensive data on material properties of living tissues, simplified models such as widespread linear elastic models are usually applied. However, large deformations often occurring in craniofacial surgery can not be accurate...
متن کاملDeformable modeling of facial tissue for craniofacial surgery simulation.
While deformable object modeling has been studied by computer graphics specialists for more than two decades, only a few applications in the field of surgical simulation have been developed which provide both real-time and physically realistic modeling of complex, nonlinear tissue deformations. Particularly in craniofacial surgery, the prediction of soft-tissue changes--which result from altera...
